Trading Standards officers are investigating a roofing scam in Bradford after an 81-year old couple from Odsal complained about the quality of their roofing work.
The couple received a leaflet posted through their door with a great price for guttering and roofing work, which they needed doing. The company who posted it was called Everwhite and they arranged to come round asap to do the work, which included the replacement of some roof felt and fascia boards as well as guttering checks.
Everything seemed fine until about three weeks later, when after some heavy rain they noticed problems with their roof. After having contacted the company who said they would come back out, which they didn’t, they then tried another professional company who said it would cost another £800 to repair.
The damage was caused during their poor work and during the heavy rain, water was pouring down off the roof.
The couple then rang the Citizens Advice helpline and they were told to send the company letters to the registered address, however this failed as after having sent a few, they got a polite letter back from a homeowner who informed them that the address the bogus company used was just a residential house.
After the ordeal, the old lady told a local paper: "We’ve got no choice but to use our savings, we can’t not do anything about it as the work will have to be done before winter. It’s terrible! The company didn’t pester us, they just delivered the leaflet, and it looked a good price.
The couple didn’t think there was anything to worry about, especially as they have the original receipt, 10 year guarantee and the original brochure with the amazing savings on it.
The scam company used to have a website, which has now been removed and they made the promise to ‘beat any genuine quote’ and ‘carry out work in a respectable manner.’
At DPR we were outraged to hear of something like this is happening right on our doorsteps in Yorkshire and hope that the couple can find a way to get it sorted without having any further financial burden.
We would like to remind people to be extremely careful of any direct mail that comes through the door from roofers and to always get secondary quotes if you are to have roof repairs carried out. Although it may look a good deal, there may be a major reason why.
If you are unsure on the credibility of a quote or would like a second opinion, please do not hesitate to contact us on 0113 335 0043.
