Owning a home is all about having a good roof over yours and your families head. Despite it being such a critical part of any house, not many people know much about maintaining and repairing roofs.

Being able to spot some tell-tale signs of damage is important – spotting a roofing problem early can save you a lot of money in the long run. Here are a few examples of some indications that your roof has damage:

Cracked/slipped tile

If you have a tiled roof and have experienced any damp or leaks, then you may well have a cracked or slipped tile. This is a very minor repair for us at DPR, but if left, can spiral into more problems – for example the leak could progressively worsen. If a tile has slipped from your roof then you could likely identify the issue by simply surveying your roof from ground level, as there would be a particular patch that looked different from the rest.

Sagging

Modern roofs have very little or no tolerance for sagging – this means that precise levels of fall across the roof are required, otherwise water will pond and cause further problems. Tiled roofs often have precise interlocking of tiles at specific angles. If sagging causes a disruption in the interlocking then water can spill into the openings, making the situation worse.

We at DPR advise you to take great care when it comes to inspecting problems on your roof. Sometimes it’s best to take a step back from your property and periodically check your roof from the ground. If you decide to go up on a ladder then please make sure you have someone with you at all times. Additionally, don’t risk going up if you feel unstable or unsafe – there are times when even we as professionals don’t do so, and opt for other methods instead.
