A nursery in Wakefield had a scary and unplanned full roof repair job last month after a simple problem with their flat roof escalated into a complete collapse of their roof.

The nursery owner had contacted DPR’s Wakefield Roofers after they had noticed that the felt on their flat roof had begun to lift and that water was pooling on top of the roof. Where the felt had become lifted water had been able to find a way into the property and cause small, (although they would get bigger over time) damp patches in the ceiling.

After a comprehensive survey was carried out by top surveyor Neil Taylor, it was recommended that a fibreglass roof with a 20 year guarantee would be the best suited repair.

The full work for this would include:
• The stripping in full of all felt finish and timber decking boards. Some roofs may be overboarded. (New specialist decking boards have to be fitted for the system to work and be fully guaranteed). De-nail the roof timbers and fit new tongued and grooved 0SB3 Sterling roof decking boards in full to all areas.
• Create a channel through central wall section to allow water to discharge to left side gutter
• Fitting of bespoke pre-made fibreglass trims to the roof perimeter and apply new resin coat and fibreglass matting to all junctions of such.
• Clean down the roof decking of all dust and apply laminate resin coat in conjunction with high quality fibre glass matting and to extend to bind in with the pre-fitted trims. Preparation of all joints with glass paper in readiness for a final clean off of all dust.
• Application of the specially formulated coloured topcoat (middark grey) to all the roof area and trims to make a seamless watertight seal.
• New fibreglass flat roofs carry a twenty year guarantee from invoice date and as such you should retain your invoice as proof of guarantee. Your roof will have a life expectancy of 50+ years from fitment. This could be less, dependent on if any ladders/foot traffic is experienced upon.

The client was extremely pleased with the work which was to be carried out and it was all agreed.
However, once DPR started working on the roof and uncovering the damage, they noticed a much more severe problem, which would ultimately lead to the roof collapsing. Luckily, our expert team had become aware of this early enough and moved out all items from the room below, ensuring no one or thing was injured or damaged during the collapse.

The wood was so rotten (see picture) that it could not withstand any weight and once we tried to repair it, the roof eventually collapsed. One of the reasons why the roof had become so sodden was because of faulty fitted guttering so DPR also undertook re-alignment of gutters and fitted this properly.

As a result of the collapse, our team worked quickly to carry out a full repair to the delight of the client and still managed to finish the work within a quick timeframe. The work which was originally scheduled to do was also carried out to solve the initial problem.

This is a very rare scenario however it highlights how our team can adapt to differing issues whilst on the job and continue to offer high levels of roofing at the same time.
