Next month Switzerland will host the World Championship for Young Roofers with the UK looking to defend its Gold and Silver medals won at the previous competition in Belfast 2010.
Held from the 14th to 16th November, the event will see the UK compete in both the Pitched (Slating and Tiling) and the Waterproofing (Flat Roofing) disciplines in teams of two made up from SkillBuild winners.
The competition will see the pitched roofers faced with a complex ‘Swiss’ Valley in Clay Biber tiles and an unusual cladding system (with a single-ply under-roof) incorporating solar panels; whilst the Waterproofing team will need to tackle a very tricky Single Ply and a Reinforced Bitumen Torch-On specification.
The task to win a medal outside your own country is not an easy one, as the visiting roofers have to apply their skills according to Swiss specifications. However, the teams and mentors have been able to train in the host country for several weeks and this has enabled them to use all of the correct materials and learn how to adhere to the Swiss requirements.
The event is organised by IFD – International Federation for the Roofing Trade, the worldwide highest body representing the interests of the roofing trade.
Leeds roofers DPR would like to wish the UK’s young roofers the best of luck for the competition, and while we don’t have a representative at the event, we are confident that if there was an event to find Yorkshire’s most experienced roofers we’d be in with more than a shout.
