A swimming pool in West Yorkshire has been closed after a structural report found the roof was at risk of collapse.

Calderdale Council said the pool, on Town Hall Street in Elland, would be closed while further assessments were carried out and although the move would be disappointing council officers were left with little choice but to close the pool.

The councils report said there was "severe corrosion" in iron roof supports at Elland Pool which posed a "significant danger" to staff and swimmers.

Councillor Pauline Nash, the council&#146s cabinet member for communities, said: "The condition of the roof supports is such that, to keep the pool open would be putting the public and our staff in danger.
"The safety of the public is paramount and the council is not prepared to take any risks on this issue."
She said officers and councillors would discuss what further action should be taken.
