3 December 2014 brought the announcement by the government of a £15 million fund for the repair of roofs and rainwater goods on listed church buildings. Representatives of the Church of England, who hope to make applications for funds to repair roofs on many of their grade 1 listed churches, welcomed this news. The news is also welcomed by Huddersfield roofing company DPR, who foresee a wide uptake of this generous grant.
The Chancellor has announced that grants of between £10,000 and £100,000 may be applied for to facilitate urgent or necessary repairs to roofs or rainwater goods, such as guttering, for listed places of worship of all faiths throughout the UK. The deadline for these applications was January, and decisions will be made by the end of March 2015.
The Second Estates Commissioner, the Rt Hon Sir Tony Baldry MP, explained, “All parish churches need to have decent roofs and serviceable guttering”. Roofers at DPR Huddersfield welcome the news that the government acknowledges the importance of keeping roofs and guttering in good order, and recommend that all Huddersfield buildings would benefit from regular roof inspections, to prevent roof repairs becoming more expensive than necessary. Roofing company DPR has over 20 years’ experience in roof repairs in the Huddersfield area, and the experienced roofing services team regularly see the problems that neglected roof problems can bring.
The Bishop of Worcester, Rt Rev Dr John Ingle, also professed himself to be “delighted” at the “generous fund”. He makes the point that “ A secure roof can last 100 years and will prevent gradual, and ultimately costly, decay of fabric.” Huddersfield roofers DPR, who always recommend prompt action to prevent worsening of the condition of damaged roofs, support this opinion wholeheartedly.
