Following a successful campaign led by the Federation of Master Builders, the Green Party has pledged to cut the rate of VAT on housing repairs and renovations to 5%, the lowest rate allowed by European rules, as part of their election campaign.

Roofers DPR (Leeds) Ltd are pleased to report that Tom Chance, Green Party housing spokesman, takes the view that this measure will be hugely beneficial in increasing employment levels throughout the housing construction and maintenance industry. The Green Party estimates that making this reduction in VAT on housing repairs and renovations would lead to an increase of 42,000 jobs in the construction industry. He states, “This Vat cut would be a real boost for green jobs and warm homes.” The Green Party focuses on the effect the reduction in the repair and renovations tax would have on encouraging homeowners to invest more in improving the insulation levels in their homes, thereby making better use of energy, and moving towards ‘greener’ home heating. This, they say, would have the added advantage of reducing fuel poverty.

The ‘Cut the VAT Coalition’, led by the Federation of Master Builders, is made up of more than sixty charities, business groups, financial institutions, and trade alliances, and they are urging all political parties to back this proposed tax reduction. FMB Chief Executive Brian Berry says that “ A Vat Reduction on housing renovation and repair will empower homeowners to contribute to growth, jobs and greener homes” He adds that “Independent research shows that the wider benefits of VAT reduction on housing renovation and repair would stimulate more than £15 billion of wider economic activity.”

Leeds roofers DPR forecast that roof repairs in the Leeds area would increase significantly should this VAT reduction be implemented, but urge homeowners not to delay urgent or necessary roof repairs whilst waiting for this proposed reduction. Experienced roofing services company DPR have seen many cases where delayed repair work to roofs has led to further avoidable damage occurring, and they advise that, whilst this suggested reduction in VAT would be a great benefit to homeowners, roof repairs and maintenance should always be carried out as and when required.
