We at DPR were sad to learn of a huge fire at the Majestyk building in Leeds on Tuesday night. Fortunately the iconic property’s structure was saved, but the famous dome roof partially collapsed.

The West Yorkshire Fire services were notified of the fire at approximately 7:20PM, and spent hours attempting to put out the blaze.

The size of the incident saw crews from Huddersfield, Dewsbury, Batley, Cleckheaton and Elland all working to tackle the fire. Huddersfield contributed to the cause by providing a water tender and combined aerial rescue pump.

According to Paul Ashfield, Huddersfield’s Crew Commander, the teams had to tackle the blaze from the outside as it became too dangerous to do so internally: “The main concern was to try to stop it spreading to adjourning buildings and offices. We were hampered because we couldn’t get inside.”

For people of a certain generation, the building will only be known as a place to listen to music and dance the night away – it was used for several years as a nightclub under the name of Majestyk. The structure was built, however, in the early 1920s and has previously been a cinema, ballroom and bingo hall. It had recently undergone refurbishment in the hope of opening a leisure venue.

Thankfully, due to the West Yorkshire Fire services efforts, it will take more than a fire to eliminate this historic building from Leeds city centre’s landscape. DPR would like to take this opportunity to commend the hundreds of personnel who worked and continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety of others.
