Leeds Ranked as One of the UK’s Wettest Cities

Sun is sociable. Snow is magical. But there’s hardly anyone that likes rain! Unfortunately for us Brits, it’s quite a common occurrence, with an average of around 165 rainy days each year. Even worse, some places see more rainfall than others…

In this post, we’ll list some of the wettest places in the UK – including Leeds – and how to avoid the problems that come when the heavens open.

Rain, rain, go away

There’s an almost endless list of reasons why people don’t like the rain. It’s cold and uncomfortable if you’re caught out in it without a coat or umbrella. It can see sports events called off or affect the way they’re played. Above all else, it just doesn’t look as nice as its snowy and sunny counterparts.

But beyond these relatively trivial reasons, there are also some more serious concerns when the rain starts falling. Flooding has become far more common over the past decade, with over 5 million properties now at risk of flooding. That’s roughly one in six!

Rain is also problematic for properties with old or poorly installed roofs. Rain will find its way through even the smallest crack in your roof, potentially causing damage to the inside of your property, its structure and even the wiring.

Wettest UK cities

Whether you’re concerned about flooding, roof leaks or just boring rainy days, there are certain locations where those worries are amplified. In other words – place where there’s more rainfall than the UK average.

According to Met Office data, compiled by a flood barrier manufacturer, the wettest places in the UK are almost exclusively mountainous regions like the Lakes, Highlands and Snowdonia. These particularly wet regions push the typically ‘rainy places’ in the North down the pecking order.

However, looking specifically at cities, you can get a much better idea of how some of the more heavily populated places rank. Top of the list is Cardiff, with 1,152mm of rainfall annually:

  1. Cardiff
  2. St Davids
  3. Glasgow
  4. Bangor
  5. Truro
  6. Preston
  7. Bradford
  8. Leeds
  9. Newry
  10. Plymouth

Protecting your property from rain

Leeds is ranked as the 8th wettest city in the UK. That will probably come as no surprise to local residents, who have to put up with their fair share of rainfall throughout the year. While it’s very difficult to prepare your home for flooding, there are some simple steps you can take to stop that rain getting into your roof.

At DPR Roofing in Leeds, we recommend having your roof professionally inspected once a year to keep it in full working order. This proactive approach will make sure small issues are identified and repaired to prevent unexpected leaks, but also stop bigger problems developing over time which will require a costly replacement.
